Monarch Airlines - Travel

Just a pay per post topic and an airline that I had always wanted to know about.. What better way than to blog it !

Monarch Airlines is a charter and scheduled airline based in Luton, England. It is one of the UK's largest charter airlines operating to Europe, the USA, the Caribbean, India and Africa serving mainly leisure destinations.

The airline was established on 1st June 1967, by Mr. Bill Hodgson and Mr. Don Peacock, with finance from the Swiss Mantegazza and Albek families who own it to this day. It started operations on 5 April 1968, using a Bristol 175 Britannia turboprop. In 1971, Monarch entered the jet age with the Boeing 720 jet. By 1976, all the planes on Monarch's fleet were jets. Alan Snudden, CBE was the chairman of Monarch at this point.

Monarch was voted as the Leisure Airline of the Year 2006 at the Travel Trade Gazette Awards.

Monarch Airlines operates scheduled services to the following international destinations: Alicante, Almería, Barcelona, Faro, Gibraltar, Granada, Lanzarote, Lisbon, Las Palmas, Málaga, Menorca, Murcia, Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife, with Jerez, Larnaca and Ibiza to join the network in Summer 2007. Monarch Airlines also operate charter flights to a number of destinations for other tour operators, these include Malé, Orlando Sanford, Goa, Cancun and Cuba. Monarch is the largest airline provider of such services, which effectively lease aircraft out to tour operators for a flight.

Monarch was named as Leisure Airline of the Year in recent Travel Industry Awards. Fares on Monarch flights include complimentary daily newspapers, a refreshing hot towel service and require no additional payment for checking-in baggage; also available is a unique range of tasty hot and cold meals. In the world of Model airplanes, Monarch also has contracts with several airplane model companies, such as Wooster, Flight Miniatures, etc.

2006 was a record-breaking year for award-winning low cost airline Monarch, with the airline carrying over 3.2 million scheduled passengers in the twelve-month period, compared with 2.6 million in 2005 – a 23.9% increase year-on-year. Passenger traffic for December 2006 also continued to soar with the airline carrying 166,697 scheduled passengers, an 11.9% increase compared to December 2005. 2007 will see passenger traffic rise further still with capacity increases on a number of popular routes as well as the airline’s expansion in to the Eastern Mediterranean with the first low-cost scheduled flights from the UK to Cyprus. The percentage of bookings made on the airline’s website, http://www.flymonarch.com/ was also up by 3%.

Since 1967, Monarch Airlines has been dedicated to providing customers with value, quality and choice. In the early days, they had just two aircraft: today, Monarch's fleet features 28 of the world's most modern jetliners - and each year we fly 5 million people to more than 100 destinations.

Monarch Airlines and Monarch Aircraft Engineering are both subsidiaries of Monarch Holdings Plc. Other companies in the group include household-name tour operators such as Cosmos, Avro, Archers Direct and Cosmos Tourama as well as the online hotel booking service somewhere2stay.com.
